Royal Pythons can be a great pet for those who have never owned a snake before. They are typically very gentle and calm snakes, as well as being very curious. Royal pythons are probably one of the easiest snakes to keep as a pet, as long as all their basic requirements are met. One thing that you do however need to be aware of is that they can grow up to 1.5 metres in length.

Even though Royal Pythons grow to a great length, they prefer to live in a relatively small area in comparison to its size. Vivariums, glass tanks and plastic containers often provide great homes for these beautiful snakes. Royal Pythons come from areas of Africa, and are accustomed to warm temperatures. You will need to provide them with an ambient pressure of 27 to 29 C during the day with slightly cooler temperatures during the night. A warmer basking temperature of 32 C in the day and 27 C in the night time is also needed. Temperatures can be controlled by a basking light or a thermostat.

Your python’s home should be comfortable and give it places to hide under or cling onto. You can put a branch in the tank, and bark chips on the floor. Your Royal Python will need somewhere to hide as well, so an open plastic container or the lie could be put in for that purpose. A humidity box with moss and lichen growing in it should also be placed in the tank with the snake.

You will also want to ensure that there is fresh water readily available for the python, in case it is thirsty or would like to bathe. You will need to feed it mice or rats, which can be bought from the pet store already dead. When your snake is due to shed its skin, you will typically be able to recognise a thin milky film over its eyes. Washing your python in lukewarm water will typically help it to shed within a day or so.
