Wild horses naturally groom themselves and one another in a variety of ways, including rolling around, scratching against things and by using their teeth. When a horse is taken to the stables, it is therefore necessary for them to still be groomed, and this can go a long way to building a good relationship between the rider and the horse. Grooming will not only keep your horse looking clean and well-cared for, but will also enable the rider to look for any cuts or bruises that may require attention. (more...)

Do you know that millions of cats and dogs are euthanized in animal shelters every year? Every day, thousands of kittens and puppies are born in the United States alone. Every year, 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are brought to U.S. animal shelters and about 3 to 4 million of these animals were not welcomed to any homes; and thus, euthanized. This fact is saddening. But where did these animals come from? Most people would think they are the strays and the abandoned. Some would conclude that these animals were unwanted because they are of mixed breed, the misbehaved, and the untamed ones. If you’re a pet owner, you should think that you might be one of the causes why millions of animals were ending up in animal shelters and were euthanized after getting rejected or abandoned from their homes. The one major factor of this crisis is over-population due to uncontrolled breeding of pets. News about dog-biting incidents alarmed the public due to risk of rabies infections. In addition, these stray animals mess around with garbage cans while hunting for food, and defecate and urinate in public places. Other problems resulting from over-population are: overloaded animal shelters, cruelty to animals, stress to animal workers related to euthanasia, and general public costs like animal food, investigation on cases of animal cruelty, and capture operations. Responsible pet owners should spay or neuter their pets so that these animals will not multiply anymore. Most people believe that neutering (or spaying) is cruel. Well, you have to be cruel to be kind. Just think about those puffy kittens and cuddly puppies that ended up in animal shelter homes. Those cute creatures are better left unborn than be euthanized in the end.

Cats are independent creatures. They seem to have built-in knowledge of how to take care of themselves. However, cats still need their owners to provide general safety, health care, clean food and water, comfortable shelter, and love. Here are 10 ways to ensure health, happiness, and safety of your cat: 1. Patience is required when training a cat. Ask advice from the veterinarian or local animal shelter to help solve a particular problem with your cat’s behavior. 2. Set aside time for bonding sessions with your cat. Cats do not need as much physical exercise as dogs, but they enjoy playing and cuddling. 3. Regular grooming makes your cat’s coat soft and shiny. Brush the coat of your cat whether long-haired or short-haired to remove loose hair. Otherwise, cats may ingest them, which may lead to hairballs. 4. Teach your cat to remove bad habits. With time and patience, your cat can be trained not to scratch its nails anywhere and to stop jumping on tables or countertops. 5. Provide complete nutrition and clean water to keep your cat strong. Follow the veterinarian’s advice on feeding your cat. 6. Spay or neuter your cat if you didn’t want to populate your home with cats. Sterilization also keeps your cat healthier. 7. Give your cat regular veterinarian check-ups. Finding a veterinarian who makes your cat feel calm and safe is important. 8. Do not let your cat out of the house at all times. Cats are basically homebodies. To keep them away from disasters, keep them indoors. 9. Register your cat. You must follow the local laws regarding pets in your community to protect both you and your cat. 10. Hang these around your cat’s neck: name, address, and contact number. Buy a cat’s collar with an attached ID tag where you put your contact info. This will ensure that your cat will be returned back to you if it gets lost.
